I'm not sure if this might be more appropriate in the "Merlin's Past" Area, as this is more about designing a better sequel for "Merlin" than strictly discussing Merlin's Apprentice. BUT this section had fewer threads, so I went for this.
Basically, since a lot of us seem to agree that MA could have been better, to put it lightly, and since the "Redeeming Features" thread is filled only with tumbleweed so far, an alternate idea for a thread! Basically, what you think Merlin's Apprentice SHOULD have been, or some ideas as to what it could have been instead. Whether it's an entirely different idea for a film entirely, or simply a few minor tweaks to the film as it is- or, even better, several suggestions, including both!- post 'em up.
I seem to recall that there were a lot of rumours before MA came out that it was intended not really as a "sequel" in the strictest sense, but was to take place between the two halves of Merlin- presumably because there was a boy credited as playing "Young Arthur", which turned out to be in a flashback, and also because Miranda was listed as playing Queen Mab again, for a brief period on imdb (damn stupid website). In a way, I think that might have been an almost better idea than for a straightforward sequel- after all, the first film, whilst I may not like all of it's endings, was pretty conclusive in what happened to the characters. It didn't really need a sequel to tie up loose ends, and to be honest, like it or loathe it, MA doesn't really tie up anything from the first either way, due to it's insane lack of regard for it's canon.
In the books and film, the whole period is pretty much breezed over. Merlin and Sir Ector raise Arthur, Uther goes mad, and Mab pretty much just watches, it seems. It seems unlikely that Uther's descent into madness would have no effect whatsoever on the kingdom, as appears to be implied. It could be interesting to see a more "turbulent" Britain, and what Mab might attempt to gain her own strength during the time.
