Well Gawain is in many old british legends - but in Merlin his part is not quite so big as it could be....
What about fanfic ideas? A young noble knight on the side of Arthur - does he never get tempted by the forbidden?

Green knight Well I barely remember him from the movie, I would have blanked him completely had it not been for the cool name. When thinking Arthurian I think, Merlin, Guinevere, Lancelot, Mordred and now Mab for obvious reasons.

Well Tolkien once wrote something about him... Was a legend about him searching for the Holy Grail. He found it actually but was not able to touch it, cause only a pure heartedt can really attend the Holy Grail. In the movie its just, well I mean really Lancelot is not sexy, Arthur isn't either.. I mean there aren't many sweeties left for a young woman... And Mordred is to short living ;-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Gawain_and_the_Green_Knight

Mmm is an altogether approach I have heard very little of Gawain. And that's a fair point about the guys in the movie but it explains why the gave us the likes of Queen Mab and Lady Morgan. They more than make up for it. ;D

I don't know what became of this fanfic idea, but I would like to comment. A Merlin fanfic about Gawain and the Holy Grail sounds very nice! Great choice of knight. Famous, loyal to Arthur and a ladies man. I totally agree about the guys in Merlin. The film doesn't really offer 'male eyecandy'. You might not want to base it on 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' though. First of all the Holy Grail does not feature in this legend. The story is mostly about loyalty, towards a lord and towards the lady. Secondly it has an ironic undertone. In a nutshell: Gawain is on a quest but he doesn't do much more than lie in bed all the time. At the end he breaks his promise towards the lord, cheats and proves himself to be a coward. The ‘ideal knight’ utterly fails.

Mordred.....Vortigern.... ok very little but still ;D You might not want to base it on 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' though. First of all the Holy Grail does not feature in this legend. A fanfic about some of the "Camelot characters" could be fun... I didn't pay much attention to Gawain during the film, he had a slightly bigger role in the novelisation of the series, though (Arthur named him as his heir before the final battle, in fact)- I suppose he's OK looking TBH, I have an extraordinarily narrow, and, I'm told, bizarre taste in men, so I'm probably not the best one to judge, but I don't see much eye candy in it anyway XD I've yet to read the story of Gawain and the Green Knight, but a quest involving lots of lieing in bed? Sounds like my kind of quest!

Are you trying to tell us you would like to write a fic? of course I would . But the knights in the Merlin film are boring, I don't feel quite up to that challange. I don't want to spoiler but my present fic will include a knight... a narrow and bizarre taste in men? Join the club a quest involving lots of lieing in bed? Sounds like my kind of quest! It truly is an epic quest! The lord of the castle, where Gawain is staying, goes out hunting every day or so. Gawain does not join him, he stays in bed. The lord's wife sneaks into Gawain's bedroom every single time, offering herself to him. He, being a courteous knight, tries to refuse her without insulting her. It's such fun!

I have an extraordinarily narrow, and, I'm told, bizarre taste in men, so I'm probably not the best one to judge, but I don't see much eye candy in it anyway XDIm the same but in men and women, I basically I only like em if they're weird enough and distinctive. If that makes sense. I've yet to read the story of Gawain and the Green Knight, but a quest involving lots of lieing in bed? Sounds like my kind of quest! I probs never will but yes lying in bed is awesome. I know I do it 24/7 Are you trying to tell us you would like to write a fic? of course I would . Hilarious again reading your posts.
No do not base a fanfiction on these medieval novels but rather on our most beloved television adaption.
Since Sebastion Roche played him so super flawless and extra noble (defying his father for serving the righteous king, helping his contrahent Lancelot after the tournament without basicly knowing him etc...) I sometimes wonder in an alternate universe how he would get on with Mab... probably a demon in his eyes, which promises some base for juicy encounters..

Hmmm, well, given Mab's mad chemistry with everyone and the firmly gutter located minds of us fangirls, I suspect it would end with some variety of sex XD
But on a more serious note, I suspect it would depend when he encountered her. During the majority of the film, I suspect she would be a kind of distant threat in the back of Gawain's mind. If his family are recent converts to Christianity, perhaps he even remembers a time when he/those close to him worshipped her. He seems like a man who puts more stock in practical matters than in mysticism - leave Mab to Merlin, and he will protect Arthur from more tangible threats such as his father's army. By the end of the film however, she is a much more tangible threat, who has done more to hurt him personally (she raises Mordred, trains him to kill Arthur and sets him loose - not only does Gawain's friend and king get killed, but Mordred takes his dad out on the way, bad times). Things have gotten a bit more personal.

are we that obvious?
Yeah but you're right. Just add to the personal matters the fact that Mordred kills Gawains father...
