I finally got around to watching this on Netflix! It's a prequel series to the 1980s Jim Henson film, made "live action" using puppets as in the original version. I really enjoyed it, I thought that it felt very in keeping with the original film both in looks and tone. It IS very dark for a show supposedly aimed at children and families (Peeper-Beetles, anyone?), but I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone who's a fan of the original film, or fantasy in general.
Basically the prequel is set earlier in the rule of the Skeksis - this is when we see the Gelflings go from serving the Skeksis and belieiving in their benevolence, to finding out about their corruption and rebelling against them. The original film shows the aftermath of this war, so it always felt very much like the conclusion to a story that we haven't been told yet.
There's quite a few Merlin links in this - I've posted in here rather than in the actor's threads as I wasn't sure who to pick!
Billie Whitelaw (Ambrosia) played Aughra in the original film. Aughra also plays a major role in the series, though unfortunately Billie Whitelaw had passed away by the time the prequel was filmed, so was recast. Hats off to the new VA though, who I think manages to get the voice and mannerisms down quite well.
Helena Bonham Carter (Morgan) plays the All-Maudra (Mayrin) in the prequel series - basically she is the ultimate ruler of all of the Gelfling clans, who initially works alongside the Skeksis, and the mother of one of the main characters.
Lena Headey (Guinevere) plays Maudra Fara, the leader of the Stonewood Clan (basically a warrior clan).
There's also quite a lot of other well known actors from well known sci-fi and fantasy franchises in this - Jason Isaacs, Simon Pegg, Natalie Dormer, Mark Hamill, Signourney Weaver etc.
Wondering if anyone else has seen this, and if so, what do you think of it?
