Yes, it would be somewhat belittling to think that your powers, which are pretty much the greatest of their kind, don't match up to those of the average gnome.

LOL, yes, Merlin must have tremendous insecurity issues. Perhaps that's why he leaves the Land of Magic? He goes from being the only person who can use any magic that he knows, to being a relative weakling. Sucks to be him indeed.

Hm. I never saw it from that point of view. It opens up a whole new perspective.
Merlin: "You humiliated me by having me taught by Frik! My wrath is upon you!"

Well, he did sound rather bitter when he said "It was Frik who taught me.."

I don't think Frik was just an average gnome. Or else Mab wouldn't have relied on him as she did. I think either he himself, or Mab, enhanced his powers when he was employed by her, making him very powerful, at least more powerful than a regular gnome.

Though Mab would never admit to relying on him

True, more as an understudy.

This is quite true. Although, whilst I think she relies on him to a certain extent, she doesn't hesitate to fire him, so she evidently sees him as somewhat replaceable (by this point, at least).

Because of course she replaces him with Mordred.
Damn Mordred

I suppose you could say that, although in a very different capacity- Mordred is meant to be Mab's champion- a warrior, whereas Frik is anything but, he's more a sort of butler-type role than anything else. I can't imagine that either Mordred or Frik would fit the other's role all that well.

Awh, now what did Mordred ever do to you? Yes, similarly, in the books, Frik was worried at one point before Merlin arrived, because he thought he'd no longer be necessary - then when he thought about it for a bit, he came to much the same conclusion.

Nope, it's a mental image that doesn't work.

Yes, true, I suppose. But let's face it, he and Morgan don't seem too fond of each other at all, particularly in the scenes where Mordred is an adult. Morgan is fixated on Frik, Mordred is fixated on Mab.

I'd probably laugh at my mother's death if I'd been brought up like that. ^^ Each to his own, I guess... personally, I am rather fond of this pond scum of which you speak...
