Why is it left to me to begin a thread on Frik? The main, if not sole source of comic relief in the entirety of the first film, and a separate story line in his own rite. Please will someone give some commentary on the teachings, cringings and eventual rebellion of the most entertaining character that i have seen in Any film. Have a heart  |

Oh, I loved Frik. He was so entertaining, and funny. Great source of wisdom and magic. I missed him in the second one.

Well, Frik amuses me too, if that's any help. ;D He does pull some great faces, and the sub plot with Morgan is sweet, I guess.
Who knows, I might even have liked him for the first half of the film the first time I watched it.
I don't know if you've read the books, but I would personally have liked to see a few more of his weird and wonderful costumes in the film.

I loved his romance between Morgan. I was hoping he would get some loving. It was sweet and cute ... too bad Mab had to cut it short.

Yes, that's true. Both film and novelisation seem to imply that Frik uses the third stage of magic, and, whilst he is not as strong as Mab, he is certainly stronger (or at least more adept at using magic) than Merlin, and yet, his powers are, as you say, understated and used very rarely. And it's left to you to make a post on Frik because the rest of us are so nice and are allowing you your own character to become an authority on (and has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that the rest of us, by and large, are rabid Mab fangirls, and so somewhat distracted from the other characters  ) |

Ah well, we do try to behave. Occasionally.
And yeah, they could have made more out of Frik's magic. It was brilliantly used in the "Merlin comes to the land of Magic" scene.
But, bearing in mind that the movie is almost 9 years old, I guess it might have been a money issue. Sadly.

The money issue could very well be an element in it.
If the movie had not included Morgan dieing, I would have to say that Frik is a wise creature who does not rely solely on his magic to do things. He uses it a lot, but not as a first resort (but not as a last resort either). But then Morgan dies and you see him left with nothing, so wiseness might not have had anything to do with it.
Though, that could be turned around and said that it is wisdom in which he uses his powers sparingly, but it blows up in his face in the end.

Yes, I suppose that's true. It might have been wiseness to a certain degree, although he does seem to use it rather extravagantly when it comes to changing his appearance, changing Morgan's appearance, and other similar things.
Even after she pushes Morgan down the stairs and Frik loses his temper with her, he never tries to use his magic against Mab. Wonder if that's because he knows he's not strong enough, or whether he's simply not in the habit of using magic for such things.

True, maybe he uses his magic for 'good', for what he views as good. Like striking against Mab with his magic would not have only been unwise, but also been a horrible thing to do. And in changing Morgan, he did it because the woman he loved wanted to be beautiful, so it was good. And he changed himself so Morgan could love a handsome man.

Honestly, I don't think Mab would be stupid enough to employ someone who could potentially kill her
Frik could have done more than just the cosmetic stuff though. He did teach Merlin everything he knew after all

Well, he taught Merlin almost everything he knew. Merlin could never get past being a hand wizard.

Yes, I doubt there was ever any possibility of him being strong enough to kill or harm Mab, and he would have known that. But equally, he would have known that losing his temper with Mab would bring punishment down on him anyway, and he still did that.
But yes, he was undoubedly stronger than simply being able to do cosmetic stuff. Whether she wanted to teach Merlin herself or not, I doubt Mab would have left the magical education of her supposed future champion to someone who wasn't reasonably competent at all or most types of magic.

But then she must have suspected that Merlin might turn against her (because of Ambrosia) so if she gives him to Frik theres no way hed be powerful enough to hurt her. That final fight he didnt win by magic, but logic.
But that also means that Merlin is weaker than Frik, and the most powerful Wizard in the world. Sucks to be him
