I never understood why Mab didn't want Merlin raised as a noble. What was the point of raising him as a peasant if he's going to need to rule over the nobility?
It's not mentioned in the movie, but in the book his human mother was a noble lady sent to Avalon to become a nun. Avalon is where Elissa and Ambrosia met.
I feel like the writers were just lazily copying Christ's story. Merlin is basically the pagan Christ, down to his humble birth.
I believe that the novels mention that Mab DOES want Merlin to be raised by the nobility. Kind of. When she's casting around for a suitable mother, and the search takes her to Avalon, she specifically thinks about how the nobility sends their daughters there, and envisions Merlin getting brought up as noble, hence why she settles on a girl from Avalon. So, whilst she doesn't specifically set out to find a noble girl to be Merlin's mother, when the thought occurs to her, she goes with it.
Of course, it's kind of dropped after this point, because Merlin has to be raised by Ambrosia, and Mab has to suggest raising him herself (as happened in the film), so the nobility idea kind of gets dropped. Elissa is kicked out of Avalon, and goes with Ambrosia, due to being pregnant. I suppose, meta explanation aside, that Elissa being kicked out of Avalon causes Mab to realise that the Christian nobility aren't going to accept an illegitimate child, and so she scraps that idea.
